COVID, VIP and Faculty Research
The VIP Program operates at the intersection of education and faculty research. VIP team adaptations will be closely coupled with changes faculty are already making in their research programs. To this end, modes of delivery will be determined by instructors, so their VIP teams can operate within the constraints of their research programs. The overall goal that should guide instructors’ decisions about how teams will operate should be to follow the university's recommendations regarding operations in order to keep everyone safe/healthy while making progress on the project. Where possible, instructors are encouraged to accommodate students with differing delivery-mode needs. Remote formats may not be possible on all teams, so this is left to instructors to decide.
For teams that meet in VIP classrooms, tables and chairs are being taped-off to seat spacings of 6’, per campus guidelines. Rooms will be wiped down along with other classrooms in the buildings, but they will not be fogged, to protect electronics and equipment.
- Klaus 1440: 15 seats at U-shaped seating area; 5 seats at conference-table area.
- Van Leer 465: 8 seats at conference table.
- Van Leer 483B: Very small, room will not be used this Fall.
To ensure students understand expectations of each team, faculty are asked to document their plans through the VIP website (below), the Canvas “Course Type Expectations” tool, and their syllabi.

The VIP meetings with the instructor will be conducted during the 2020 fall semester primarily in a remote mode (BlueJeans). Infrequently, there may be necessary to meet in-person with the instructor. There will be additional weekly or bi-weekly meetings among the students who need to work on hardware platforms in the lab (ESM G13). In those cases, no more than 3 students will be allowed at a time in ESM G13 to adhere to social distancing guidelines. In any in-person meetings on campus face masks and other required health safety measures as directed by GaTech will be applied.

The GTMS VIP will be in hybrid mode. This means that most classes will be delivered remotely. However, if conditions permit, on up to three occasions we will meet in the scheduled classroom for all-class presentations and discussion, subject to distancing requirements. The schedule for these presentations will be announced during Week 1 of the class and published through CANVAS. Attendance at those events is encouraged.
While we have a scheduled room for this course (AP 1253, in the 575 14th St NW building), we will not meet face-to-face during the first week; here's the BlueJeans link for our first meeting https://gatech.bluejeans.com/383771106 (Links to an external site).

Remote, but if you are on campus we might be able to do Hybrid. It depends on the makeup of the subteams.
For those students who are on-campus, they can form sub-teams and have meetings that take place in-person, however this will not be a requirement.
|IoT in Health||VX1||Remote|
|Lightning from the Edge of Space||VPO||
Hybrid. VIP time falls into three categories: (1) Full team meeting, (2) Subteam meetings, (3) Individual work/research. #3 is already at a distance. For #1, the class will decide between video and in-person. #2 has the most potential value to in-person meeting, but also we are most flexible. I will not impose an answer that across the entire team. Is a subgroup doing purely coding? Building things? That will change the answer. These choices are better left to the subteams, as long as people are safe.
