Big Bio-Data Recapture

GOALS: To develop automation tools to recapture that published biomedical data so that it can be analyzed in a “big data” fashion.

METHODS & TECHNOLOGIES: Natural language processing (NLP), databases, web applications, user interfaces, data curation.

RESEARCH/DESIGN ISSUES: Recapturing data from publications (often called a “scrape”); uniform formatting of that data for storage; query and retrieval; developing a user interface to the data; managing the manual aspect of the data scrape; quality control.  Research field/topic specific issues.

MEETING TIME: Thurs, 9:30-10:20

ADVISOR: Robert Lee (BME)

MAJORS, PREPARATION AND INTERESTS:

CmpE, CS, CM – Background/interest in databases, web applications, NLP-related algorithms.

MGMT – Background/interest in quality control, oversight, performance metrics.

BME: Interest in research topic selection, exploring data pull options, preliminary data entry.
