21st Century Humanities

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE:

The skills taught in the humanities – communication, human-centered thinking, cultural analysis, sensemaking, aesthetics, and ethics – are crucial for success in business, science, public work, and design. How do we connect the humanities taught in the classroom to the humanities practiced out in the world?

GOALS: 

  1. To create a curriculum and textbook that prepare BS/MS students to design creative careers that change the world.
  2. To build a digital knowledge base that describes what the humanities "do" in different professional fields like tech, non-profit, media, and business.
  3. To create media for educators, policy-makers, and the public that redefines 21st century humanities.
  4. To engage partners in Atlanta in program-building that connects humanities majors to "fieldwork" experiences (internships, consulting, events, media).

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

In Cultural Studies:

  • How can colleges better prepare students for the world of work predicted for the 21st century?

  • How do Sci+Tech fields use humanities skills?

  • How do people who majored in language, cultural studies, or media use their skills in professional contexts?

  • What can the humanities learn from STEM about culture change?

In Literary Studies:

  • What is the role of poetic thinking in tackling a wicked problem?

  • Can narrative theory help us explain how people find success and happiness, grow a professional identity, or solve problems?
  • How does Sci+Tech function as a cultural discourse?

METHODS & TECHNOLOGIES: Semi-structured Interviewing; Survey Design; Textual Analysis; Cultural Analysis; Writing; Story-telling; Pedagogical design; Data visualization; Educational psychology; Media Production.

MEETING TIME: Fri, 10:10-11:00

ADVISORS: Jenny Strakovsky (Modern Languages)

PREFERRED INTERESTS AND PREPARATION: 

1) Background in or passion for the humanities and arts, e.g. writing, communication, media, performance, foreign language, close reading, art history, education.

2) Also welcoming students with training in survey design, data visualization, statistical analysis, organizational behavior, marketing, design thinking, web design.
