How much time? How many credits?

Prospective and current VIP students often ask - how much time does it take to participate in VIP weekly?

Most VIP students are required to attend a 1-hour per week in-person class*, in addition to work outside of class, which may vary based on how many credit hours a student registers for. The amount of time spent per week is similar to the time a student would spend on a traditional course.

  • Students who register for 1-credit hour can expect to spend about 2-3 hours outside of class working on their projects per week.
  • Students who register for 2-credit hours  can expect to spend 4-6 hours outside of class working on their projects per week.
  • Students who register for 3-credit hours can expect to spend 7-9 hours outside of class working on their projects per week OR completing other TA requirements.
  • Students who register for 0-credit hours are often paid by their instructor to participate in the course and should speak with them directly for guidelines.

Students also ask - how many credits should I take per term with the VIP program?

  • Students should consider our how credits count webpage to determine what their college/school requirements are
  • Sophomore students are eligible to take 1-credit hour per semester
  • Junior students are eligible to take 1-2 credit hours per semester
  • Senior students are eligible to take 1-3 credit hours per semester
